Quick Reaction: A Crazy Week In The MLB
This last week in the MLB has been one to remember. I’ve been glued to my TV watching as many games as possible that I forgot to write a blog about what’s been going on. The weather is perfect, school is winding down and there are at least three ball games on a day.
There has been a lot of interesting stuff happening in America’s pastime, so to save you some time I’ve put together a quick rundown:
Pitching has been electric this year
We’ve had two no hitters this year thanks to Chicago White Sox’s Carlos Rodon and Joe Musgrove, a San Diego Padre. As a fan, I love seeing no-hitters; not only because of how rare they are, but also because who doesn’t love seeing zeros all across the scoreboard? The San Diego native Joe Musgrove made Padre history giving the franchise their first-ever no-hitter. The Padres were the last team in the MLB to have their franchise-first no-hitter.
The no-hitters were ever so close to being perfect games, but sadly they were interrupted by two hit by pitches. So close, yet so far. Musgrove and Rodon were each one hit by pitch away from having the 28th and 29th perfect game in MLB history.
Shane Bieber and Gerrit Cole are top of the leaderboard when it comes to strikeouts with 48 and 39, respectfully. However, I expect nothing less from Cole because he got PAID this offseason. The man pisses excellence and strikes people out left and right, enough said. I’m more shocked at Bieber’s stat line. He was an all-star not too long ago, but he’s currently carrying the second place Cleveland Indians.
Oh and by the way, Dallas native Clayton Kershaw is leading the league with three wins right now as of April 19th. I know what you’re thinking: what’s the big deal about three wins right now? It’s a pretty big deal that a superstar is dealing right from the beginning of the season. If I’m a major league player and I see Kershaw has three wins and a 2.19 ERA, I’d be scared shitless because when Kershaw is in top form, nobody can hit off him.
The Yankees are garbage
The Yankees suck right now. They are disgracefully bad, and I absolutely love it! They have a 5-10 record which is good enough for their worst record through 15 games in the past 25 years.
Maybe they’ve peaked. I know it’s early in the year, but the AL East is a tough division. Vlad Jr. and the Blue Jays are picking up steam, Boston is looking good (even without Mookie), and the god forsaken Baltimore Orioles are winning more than the Yanks right now. That’s bad man, the O’s tend to lose 100 games a year yet they are topping the Yankees like I beat a solitaire game; with ease.
I may not be Buster Olney or Tim Kurkjian, but the Yankees need to fix themselves if they want any chance of winning number 28.
Ronald Acuña Jr. missing?
The most pressing news of the day is the status of Ronald Acuña Jr. and his injury. He’s already a perennial MVP candidate and he’s only 23. Acuña is one of the most lively players in the game and without a doubt the most fun to watch.
This injury occurred yesterday when the Braves were playing the Cubs, which they slaughtered by the way. Acuña tried to play through the game but had to leave the game early because of an abdominal injury.
No matter what ball club you support, as a fan you should hate to see this. Baseball needs young stars. I’m hoping it’s only a strain or nothing too serious and he comes back by the end of the month.
