USFL Uniform Rankings: The Red, the Red, and the Red
The USFL is coming back this April and have unveiled each of their eight teams' new uniforms Thursday. There are some good and bad, and there’s a lot of red. Five of the teams sport the color red.
Some of the uniforms are legit, while others look like they belong on a straight to DVD movie from the 2000s. Here are my power rankings for the new threads:
8. Philadelphia Stars:
Red/yellow is a dangerous color scheme. It can look be iconic (i.e. Iron Man) or can turn out like… this. The colors are way too loud, and the stripes helmet and sounds are too bulky. I’m not sure what they were trying to do with those stripes either, what do the diagonal lines have to the team nickname? The logo doesn’t work for me either. It looks like a ripped off version of the Starter logo.
7. Pittsburgh Maulers:
Ooooooof pretty sure these are an option if you decide to relocate your team in Madden, or is it a ripoff of Blue Mountain State? Either way these don’t work. The color scheme and uni design is pretty uninspired. The shoulder pad/torso color swap jerseys belong in the mid 2000s.
6. Tampa Bay Bandits
These don’t do anything wrong, but they don’t do anything right either. The logo and colors are ripped off from Texas Tech, and they don’t do anything exciting with it. The only real props I can give them is they kept it simple and didnt do anything silly like the teams above. They’re doing something we’ve seen before, and aren’t doing anything exceptional with it.
5. New Jersey Generals
Much like the Bandits, the Generals uniform set doesn’t do anything wrong, but they don’t do anything different. I think the only thing separating the Generals unis from the chiefs is the logo on the helmet.
4. Birmingham Stallions
Stallions suffer from the same fate as the Generals and Bandits. They’re just not bringing anything new to the table. They’re unis are basically Florida State with the Broncos logo slapped on the helmet. What separates the Stallions from the two guys above is that they have the best color scheme out of the group and the all white set in the USFL.
3. Houston Gamblers
Here’s where things start to get good, and good in a hurry. I love the logo on the helmet, which is easily the best in the USFL. Even though this is another Texas Tech rip off, I think the Gamblers really separate themselves from the rest of the designs with their color scheme.
2. Michigan Panthers
This was a really tough decision. I almost put these guys at number one, but I stopped myself because the #1 spot was just more original. But don’t hold that against these unis, they do everything right. The burgundy and gold is clean, and the spots of blue inside the stripes are chefs kiss to the whole design. I’m also in love with the blue stripes on the sleeve. The helmet is no slouch either, putting an oversized panther on the sides was a great idea. Really a 10/10 for a spring football league uniform set.
1. New Orleans Breakers
Oooooo we that helmet is CLEAN. The uniforms remind of something you would see on a graphic designers instagram, but like a really talented one. The colors work well with each other and it all pays off with that helmet design. I’d even go as far to say that these logos are even better than some NFL unis that weve seen in the past. The away set could use some work though. The silver pants are a miss, and really could have benefited from an all white set.
