Preusser's NHL Rundown: Ovechkin Makes History
Ovechkin makes history… again
Alex Ovechkin may be getting older, but he is not showing any signs of slowing down. On Saturday, he scored his 708th goal in overtime against the Bruins. He is now tied with Mike Gartner for the seventh most goals in NHL history. Not only did he move up in the standings for goals, he also became number four in NHL history for his 111th game-winning goal.
Ovechkin was also part of another history making moment when he, Sidney Crosby, and Connor McDavid all scored the overtime game winners 12 minutes apart from each other. This is the first time three number 1 draft picks have done that. It surprised me that this is the first time that this has happened, but a pretty cool moment in history nonetheless.
This Week’s Lineup:
Some games have been cancelled due to COVID-19, though I am still looking forward to a few matchups.
Monday Feb 1
I am looking forward to the Bruins Capitals matchup. These teams are both powerhouses, and the Bruins fell in overtime during their last game against the Caps. This matchup particularly intrigues me because the former Bruins captain, Zdano Chara, now plays for the Capitals. Even though this will not be the first game between these teams, I think that every time they meet, it will be a quality showdown.
Tuesday Feb 2
For the first time this season, the Carolina Hurricanes will play the Chicago Blackhawks. I am excited about this game because these are my two hometown teams. Besides that, Detroit beat Carolina at the beginning of the season, which gives me hopes that Chicago could pull out a win.
Wednesday Feb 3
I am interested in the Detroit vs. Tampa Bay game. Not for any particular reason, just to see how many goals Tampa will put past Detroit.
Thursday Feb 4
These matchups are similar to the ones from earlier in the week. I want to keep an eye on the Canadian teams because those matchups will always be intense.
Friday Feb 5
Again, the Detroit Tampa Bay game. I wonder if how many goals Tampa scores will become a main storyline in the league.
Saturday Feb 6
In the realigned west division, Colorado and St. Louis are two teams to look out for. As this is being written, Colorado is number 1 and St. Louis is ranked number 3. Both of these teams will be competing for a spot in the playoffs, so every time they meet, you can expect them to both come ready to play.
